PERSONAL IDENTIFYING INFORMATION (PII)
The term PII is often confused with the notion of personal data. However, they are two different things. PII is a purely North American concept, which covers a set of specific personal data: full name, date of birth, telephone number, postal address, social security number, passport number, driver's license number and bank card number. While Europe has chosen, within the framework of the European regulation on the protection of personal data, a much broader definition including any data that allows, directly or by cross-referencing, to identify a natural person.
France also wanted to use the term PII, but when the legislator could not decide between "Personal Identifying Information" and "Personally Identifiable Information", the acronym piipii did not win everyone's approval...
